ETL523 Digital Citizenship in Schools is a subject in the postgraduate degree Master of Education in Knowledge Networks and Digital Innovation (School of Information Studies). It explores the concept and practice of digital citizenship. Technological, political and ethical issues concerning digital citizenship are examined, including intellectual property, plagiarism, cybersafety, freedom of information, transliteracy and the effective use of a range of technologies to support learning and teaching. Issues in policy and practice are examined to understand how learning programs and school community practices can build capacity and resilience in students to enable them to become effective and responsible digital citizens in global online learning environments.

Assignment 1 - Group Wiki Project

In this subject the focus of Assignment 1 was to work in a small team and create an authentic online learning module, demonstrating a range of digital and media affordances of the web environment. The chosen topic related to digital citizenship in an education context. This module was created using a wiki (Wikispaces) and required a high level of group communication, collaboration and co-creation skills as well as some technical skills.

Interaction with the Professions Example

Assignment 1 - Digital Citizenship Learning Module, Assignment 2 - Environmental Scan Report

The focus of Assignment 1 was to create an authentic learning module based on a chosen topic to do with digital citizenship in schools. This module was to be extensive and comprehensive enough for creators to use in their own learning environments. It could include content in various media forms, activities and assessments as needed. Assignment 2 asked students to be able to articulate and reflect on the role of an information leader and be able to develop an information policy or set of guidelines that support digital citizenship and digital learning in schools.

Teacher Presence

Announcements, Discussion Forums, Adobe Connect Meetings, Twitter

In this subject teacher presence was fostered across the use of announcements, discussion forum design, the use of online meetings using Adobe Connect and additional online communication tools. This multimodal approach provided a scaffold for establishing a strong teacher identity and effective, reliable and regular communication. It also amplified teacher to student interaction through the different choices and opportunities provided.

Assignment 1 - Digital Artefact

The individual creation of a digital artefact required students to be able to demonstrate an understanding of key concepts of digital citizenship and the social, political, ethical and technological issues affecting digital citizenship development. It also encouraged transliteracy skills and clear communication of ideas through the use of multimedia.
